Well, I'm not sure if you'll like her or not, if your favorite literature is Modernist... Here's a link at amazon for her first book of the Outlander series. The description is not that accurate. While it has strong romantic leanings-- in part only-- it's more of a historical fiction series (there are 8 books so far). She does a lot of research on the time she writes about & everything is quite accurate. Very hard to classify. I myself read science fiction/fantasy virtually all the time, I wouldn't be caught dead with a romance novel, and I LOVE THESE BOOKS!! I guess it's worth a try, if you like reading. Sorry for the "no cheez language" but that was way too much that came to me way too fast to use it! Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Outlander-Diana-Gabaldon/dp/0385319959/ref=pd_sim_b_8

I just realized that these comments don't follow the indenting. I haven't read anything by Diana... um, wasn't sure of the last name. But I wanted to clarify that. Sorry. The Scotswoman :)

The "Modern" period is said to be from the beginning of WWI (1914) to the end of WWII (1945). It's reflected in literature as the age of lost innocence. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein and Frost are all considered Modernist writers (even though some lived/wrote past that time period). I haven't read anything by her, actually. I take it you have? Any suggestions for where to start? I love it when people give me new authors to read! :) Thanks so much for the warm response!
