Sounds like a fun, happy trip! Part of my lg family rented beach houses and we "post-functioned" together after the memorial @ the ranch. Love Long Beach, WA--grate fur families. You can have the bears...prefer watching birds myself! Saw a bear cub jump from tree to tree the other night on TV...quite the Velcro action! And, you're right..crazy fast like a monkey. Enjoy your weekend, too! =^!^= OM

Ohai again LM! Sorry to hear about your losing your father; the memorial site sounds very lovely and appropriate. We just got back from a brief trip up to Colorado Springs with my mom, visiting her sister. It was a nice break for my wife and me, and the sisters always have a good time together (both up in their 80's now). We got to watch a black bear mama and her three cubs playing in a tree... those rascals can move a lot faster than I'd imagined, and we kept a respectful distance! --Have a good weekend!

Many frankz fur deh ladyburd colectabul!! Mae Dadcat passed away last Thanksgiving. We just had his memorial out near the Columbia River Gorge at their ranch. The weather turned to spring just in time for it & his May 1 birthday. He fought back from pneumonia 2x but mensa got him. Everyone came...CNA's, family from CA, TN, WI, pals & their kids even his tractor pull buddies!! The ranch will stay in the family. We dedicated a sturdy bench under his fav oak tree where his ashes had been worked into the earth. Thx, Lungdoc, for your kind thotz & help! {{LD}}

He and Mom were in assisted living when he had his stroke. Now they have moved, Mom living with my brother & family near a "rehab & long term nursing facility" where Dad lives. Mom is released from 24/7 care of Dad, and all 5 at the family home can drive and do drop in often to keep Dad happy. He can walk, ect. yet gets confused and needs reminding to keep his canula on, for example. He has become diabetic this spring. Any one who has read all of Will & Auriel Durant's History of Man would be concerned when he doesn't know how to tell time any more. He's 85 & will prob. live to see 90 or 95. I hope so! He's quite a character and I love him. =^!^=

Thanx. The reason I'd asked was that, if he had just started having breathing trouble after the stroke, the problem might have been something other than his emphysema--e.g. he might have been having trouble swallowing properly and thus be getting lung infections (aspiration pneumonia) on top of whatever trouble he might have had before. I hope he's recovering okay from the stroke--those are always scary for all concerned. *Beams getwell wishes*

Dadcat was diagnosed with emphysema in the late 80s or early 90s. The stroke happened 5/21/09.

If you don't mind mai asking, was your relative's breathing a problem before the stroke, or only after?

Ohai again! There's quite a lot on the Interwebs about emphysema but some of the info is a bit biased by drug-company support, as there are some expensive drugs for COPD with big PR budgets. Emphysema is a subset of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) so you can find information under both terms. Two fairly good spots to begin would be: http://www.thoracic.org/sections/copd/for-patients/index.html (the hyphen is part of the URL) and http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/emphysema/DS00296 --Those may give you enough to be starting with. Let me know if you have any particular questions or problems interpreting what you've been told so far; I'd be happy to help translate for you & the family if I can. Bai!
