Oh, the charity is separate. It's an annual thing that Rick does on his show. It's going right now. The "prize", besides the saving of lives in Africa, is that Rick visits the top money earning elementary school, secondary school and university. As for the school, well, our board has a declining enrollment. I won't get into the politics behind the decision but ultimately the school was "repurposed" and all the secondary kids were sent to other schools around town. The building is now home to the adult and alternative education centre, as well as the School for Young Moms, for pregnant girls and those who recently gave birth. City Hall, which was on the side of the school staying open, passed a law making it a heritage site so the school building will always be there. Just not the kids unless we have a population explosion.
And before you ask, Rick Mercer is a Canadian comedian who is more politically savvy than most of the people who run for office. This is a clip from his show where he visits my old high school, where I frequently did supply teaching. I was called in to work that day by the Vice Principal to fill in for a teacher, so I was there when Rick was there! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC9T-m9N3ys
