Sorry - I didn't notice your message until now. I think the "jerk factor" of Chris Pine's Kirk is partially that the screenwriters just didn't get it and partially that the actor didn't do enough research on the character. And maybe the screenwriters were thinking "A hero for a good guy might have been cool in the 60s, but nowadays people like to see good guys acting like jerks" which, IMO, is just stupid.

That was Karl Urban?! I did not know that. My pop-culture IQ is less than pathetic. ;-) I wish now that I had been permitted to read more fiction - sresly! I have so very much catching up to do. :-) Do you think that Chris Pine's interpretation of James T. Kirk could also have been almost impossible because of Shatner's acting quirkiness? Kirk did look to be an "insufferable jerk" in the movie. It may have been the script. Someone pointed out that Kirk would NEVER have nicknamed McCoy "Bones", based on his horrible, painful divorce! Maybe it was more the screen writers fault? Perhaps they did not "get him"? From TOS, Kirk always seemed to be more protective of his people. But then, he may have been a “jerk” when very young, and then matured? ;-) :-)

I saw the 2009 movie, but I don't have it on DVD. It was cool, but I thought the acting in TOS was better than in the new movie. The acting in the 2009 movie was good and all, but I thought that the guys who played Spock and McCoy were the only ones who really understood the characters 100% (and the guy who played McCoy gets bonus points in my book for having played Eomer in Lord of the Rings)

:-D My self as well, much TOS, some TNG, but very little of the rest. Though, I do have the 2009 Movie DVD - and have now watched it more times than I would ever care to acknowledge. ;-D I have been trying to catch up with friends, for about two years. Many of them were born into ST families, 2nd, and even some very young 3rd generations! This some people will find strange, but I like McCoy the best (I wish that he was much less cantankerous, though). I like Picard, but for some reason I find Spock a little too, "creepy"(?). Though, my bf thinks that he is "fascinating"; and jokes that Spock would probably be the only ST character that would NOT find me "too creepy", LOL!!! There is a lot to learn about this show. I did not grow up with a TV, or the media. :-)

Hai! Thx for the message. Don't worry, I think Star Trek is awesome, although I've only seen most of TOS and a little TNG. I love Spock and Picard.
